One prominent example of our restoration work is the red caboose that you first see when you drive up to our site. With a bit of ingenuity, many hours of work, and lots of "Safety Red" paint, we restored this vintage wagon-top caboose to its original “as-built” appearance
The C-2423 was built in the Baltimore & Ohio’s own shops in Keyser, West Virginia and entered service on December 15, 1941 - a week after Pearl Harbor. It is a class I-12 caboose with an unusual rolled “wagon-top” roof, ribbed sides, and bay windows. It is 13’3” high, 10’5” wide, 34’8” long, and weighs 40,400 lbs. After being retired in the late 1980s from local train service in Cleveland, the C-2423 was donated to MRPS by CSX in 1990.
You’ll discover more about this great caboose when you come to one of our Open House events. You’ll climb inside and see where the crew members spent their time, and learn more about the history of this caboose and cabooses in general.
We'd like to say a special thanks to a few people who went "above and beyond" to make the caboose restoration and its placement by our front gate possible:
